Rock and roll, rocanrol, rock n' roll es un género musical de ritmo marcado, derivado de una mezcla de diversos géneros de música folclórica estadounidense (rhythm and blues, hillbilly, blues, country y western son los más destacados) y popularizado desde la década de 1950, siendo su cantante más influyente Elvis Presley, su guitarrista mas influyente Chuck Berry y sus bandas más influyentes The Beatles y The Rolling Stones .

La expresión venía utilizándose en las letras del rythm & blues desde fines de la década de 1930, pero fue el disc jockey estadounidenseAlan Freed quien comenzó a utilizar la expresión "rock and roll" para describir ese estilo.

El vocablo "rock" deriva del término rock and roll y hoy día conserva dos significados según la Real Academia Española: "un género musical característico y popularizado en los 50" y cada uno de los diversos géneros musicales derivados del rock and roll, (que sería la definición del género contemporáneo música rock, y que históricamente vino cumpliendo el término rock and roll). Sin embargo, independientemente en la práctica existen muchos artistas dentro de la música rock que, sin realizar rock and roll de los 50, continúan denominando a su música "rock and roll".

Por otro lado, aunque el Diccionario de la lengua española en su vigésima segunda edición reconoce el término rock and roll como vozinglesa a modo de anglicismo, en el avance de la vigésima tercera edición el artículo ha sido enmendado tomando rocanrol como términoen español derivado del inglés.
